choose the correct answer
Question No - 1
- Read the following passage then choose the correct answer from a, b, c, or d: Florence Nightingale was born in 1820. Most prosperous women of her day were expected to marry and bring up children, not to take a job. But Florence Nightingale was distinctive, She wanted to become a nurse. She travelled in Europe with her father and during these trips she visited hospitals. She took notes on the management, hygiene, architecture and design of the wards as well as the work of the doctors. She became an expert on hospitals and public health. At the age of 31, Florence Nightingale spent three months studying nursing. During the Crimean War she was asked to help treat the injured soldiers. In 1854 she went to Scutari with 38 nurses. Conditions were appalling. The wounded soldiers lay on the bare and dirty floor of the hospital. There were no medical supplies and the men received only one meal a day which they ate with their hands. There were no toilets. Florence Nightingale set up a kitchen and fed the soldiers properly. Toilets were dug, the hospital was cleaned and clothes and sheets were washed and the nursing work began. Within six months, the death rate had been reduced from 60% to an amazing 2%. Florence Nightingale went round the wards at night, with her lamp, talking to the soldiers and they called her "the lady with the lamp". She is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. We remember the extraordinary contributions by remembering Florence Nightingale on her birthday, which is the same day that we celebrate International Nurses Day. 1. The word "wards" means…………….
