Read the following passage then answer the questions There is a horrible increase in the world population. It is due to a rise in birth rates, a fall in death rates and improvement in public health and medical care. This resulted in a crying shortage of food because more mouths have to be fed every year, and yet a high proportion of the population are not getting enough food. What makes matters worse is that farming is not attended to, as many country people are moving to towns and cities in the hope that they will enjoy a better standard of living, receive better medical care and greater enjoyment of life. As a result of this movement, there are crowded slum districts in cities. Is there a solution? One solution lies in the rapid increase of arable land and food production. The whole world faces the problem that raw materials are being used up at an increasing rate. Statistics suggest that it is only when people's living standards begin to rise, birth rates begin to fall. Then we have to ask: Why don't people have fewer children? The gap in wealth between rich and poor countries grows wider and wider every year. This is due to the fact that the rich get richer and the poor get babies. So poor people's conditions cannot be improved unless there is a reduction in the rate at which the population is increasing. This will depend on a much wider acceptance of family planning; otherwise, poor countries will suffer from famines, unemployment and a rapid increase in the amount of crime.
